After signing new deal with Chelsea, son of Nigeria's 1994 World Cup star makes PL2 debut
Published: January 25, 2025
Fresh from signing a new contract at Chelsea, Landon Emenalo made his Premier League 2 debut on Friday night as the development squad suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton.
This week, the versatile tri-national midfielder, who is eligible to represent the United States, England and Nigeria national teams, put pen to paper on his first professional contract after celebrating his seventeenth birthday.
Landon is the son of Michael Emenalo, a former Nigeria international left-back and current director of football for the Saudi Pro League.
A former Chelsea technical director, Michael Emenalo played for Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup as a replacement for the injured Benedict Iroha and was included in the squad for the King Fahd Cup the following year.
In his final season as a schoolboy, Landon Emenalo made his competitive debut for Chelsea U21s, coming off the bench for the last 13 minutes of a 4-1 victory against Colchester United in the Premier League Cup in January 2024.
Midway through the first half, Irish-Nigerian attacking midfielder Romeo Akachukwu put the visitors ahead with an impressive finish into the bottom corner.
In the fourth minute of first half stoppage time, Chelsea suffered a hammer blow as Jay Robinson doubled Southampton's advantage just as the whistle was about to be blown.
Landon Emenalo made his first appearance in the Premier League 2, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute to replace Harrison McMahon.
The England U17 international made his FA Youth Cup debut last month and has also featured in this seasons' U18 Premier League and Premier League Cup.
