'They owe a lot to Osimhen' - Galatasaray insider pays tribute to Super Eagles star ahead of derby
Published: February 23, 2025
As Galatasaray prepare for a high-stakes clash against Istanbul rivals Fenerbahçe at Rams Park on Monday, club insider Mehmet Özcan has heaped praise on Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen for his immense contribution to the team this season.
Since joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli last summer, Osimhen has been a revelation in the Turkish Super Lig.
The Super Eagles forward has netted 20 goals and provided five assists in 25 appearances across all competitions, cementing his status as a key figure in the club’s title charge.
His impact has been crucial in keeping Galatasaray at the top of the league standings, with the defending champions currently leading the table with 63 points from 23 games, six points ahead of second-placed Fenerbahçe.
Speaking on the Spor Alles Youtube channel, as reported by habersarikirmizi, Özcan acknowledged Osimhen’s importance to the team and hinted that the striker could leave at the end of the season.
"Osimhen will play his last Fenerbahçe derby. I don't see the possibility of him staying in Galatasaray in the new season," Özcan stated.
Özcan further stated that the Nigerian international would be extra motivated as he aims to score in what could be his final derby against Fenerbahçe.
"He wants to end his Galatasaray career with the goal he scored against Fenerbahçe. He will have extra motivation. If Galatasaray is still at the top today, they owe a lot to Osimhen."
The 26-year-old will be looking to continue his impressive form and help Galatasaray secure a crucial victory over their fierce rivals.
Beyond club football, Osimhen also has his sights set on Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, where he will play a key role in the Super Eagles’ quest for a ticket to the global tournament.
