'Accused of faking injury' - Zimbabwe coach explains Nantes forward's omission for Nigeria clash
Published: March 16, 2025
Zimbabwe national football team head coach Michael Nees has addressed the omission of France-based forward Tino Kadewere from the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria.
Nees revealed that the striker, who has struggled with injuries, was unfairly criticized in the past for allegedly faking an injury, a claim he strongly refuted.
Kadewere, 29, has been absent from the Warriors' recent campaigns due to injury concerns and has not featured for his club, Nantes, in 2025.
Despite this, Nees emphasized that the striker is still in his plans for the future, provided he regains his confidence and fitness.
"I have constant conversations with Tino. He was unfortunately made a scapegoat last time, accused of faking an injury,” Nees was quoted as saying by The Independent Zimbabwe.
"But he was out for five months. So, I think everybody who publicly criticized him for doing something like that should apologise. He has been out of action since November."
Kadewere’s omission for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers has sparked questions, particularly given his high profile in the squad.
Nees explained that while Kadewere remains part of his plans, he must prove himself by regaining his fitness and confidence before being considered for selection.
“Tino is, of course, on our list. He plays at a very high level. He must just regain confidence in his body, the fitness, and the self-belief that his body can cope with everything,” Nees added.
"And then we will invite him and assess him. If he is performing well, he will be invited."
The German coach's comments reflect the ongoing challenges Kadewere faces as he works to return to full fitness after a prolonged absence.
Nees further noted that it would be too soon for the striker to make an immediate return, highlighting the importance of match fitness for players recovering from injury.
Kadewere's exclusion has raised concerns among Zimbabwean fans, but Nees has made it clear that there is still a path back for the forward.
The coach’s approach remains patient, focusing on Kadewere’s readiness to contribute once he is physically prepared.
