'I don't want to talk' - Eric Chelle preaches focus as Super Eagles face Rwanda in make-or-mar clash
Published: March 21, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has called for focus ahead of Nigeria's crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, warning against unrealistic expectations from fans.
Chelle, who will be taking charge of his first competitive match as Nigeria's head coach, remained optimistic about his team's chances.
However, he has downplayed the hype surrounding the game, emphasizing that the squad is still in the early stages of preparation.
"I don't want to talk a lot before a game like that. I just want to tell you that this is our second training session," Chelle said during his pre-match press conference.
Despite his cautious stance, the Malian tactician stressed the importance of teamwork and preparation, highlighting the efforts made in training and tactical discussions.
"We need to be together, we have worked during the days. We have had a lot of video session, have a lot of meetings," he stated.
"We need to show to a lot of people how is your mentality, your spirit, and after that we would see you tomorrow (on Friday)."
Nigeria heads into the fixture desperate for a win, having failed to beat Rwanda in their last two encounters.
The Super Eagles managed a 1-1 draw in Kigali before suffering a 2-1 defeat in Uyo during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Currently sitting fifth in Group C with just three points, Nigeria must secure a victory to reignite hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Rwanda sits second in the group, four points ahead of Nigeria, and will be aiming to solidify its position.
With expectations high and pressure mounting, Chelle will hope his players can rise to the occasion and deliver a performance worthy of keeping Nigeria's World Cup dream alive.
