'He's got to hit the target' - Former Scotland star slams Balogun for missed chance v Celtic
Published: May 04, 2025
Former Scotland international Steven Thompson has hit out at Nigerian defender Leon Balogun for failing to convert a golden opportunity in Rangers' 1-1 draw with Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Balogun, making his return to the starting lineup after recovering from a cheekbone injury, nearly gave Rangers the perfect start when he struck the crossbar with a header just 27 seconds into the game.
The 36-year-old was left unmarked in the box and met a pinpoint cross from James Tavernier, but his effort crashed against the woodwork instead of finding the net.
The early miss set the tone for a fiercely contested Old Firm derby, with both sides ultimately sharing the spoils.
Reacting to the miss on BBC Sportsound, Steven Thompson did not hold back in his criticism of Balogun.
"He's got to hit the target. It's a free header in the middle box. It's a really, really good chance. Who was meant to be marking him?" Thompson questioned, expressing frustration at the missed opportunity that could have changed the dynamic of the match.
Despite the miss, Balogun has been a key figure in Rangers' squad this season, providing stability in defence and contributing offensively with one goal and one assist in 27 appearances across all competitions.
Rangers, however, are set to end the campaign without a major trophy, a disappointing outcome for the Glasgow giants.
Balogun, on his part, will hope his performances throughout the season catch the attention of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, as he aims to earn a recall to the Nigerian national team ahead of the Unity Cup tournament scheduled to take place in London this June.
