Dessers wins Scottish Premiership Golden Boot as nearest challenger fires blanks on final day
Published: May 19, 2025
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has officially clinched the Scottish Premiership Golden Boot, finishing the 2024–2025 campaign as the league's top scorer after his closest challenger, Simon Murray, failed to find the net on the final day.
Dessers struck early in Rangers' 2-2 draw with Hibernian on Saturday, registering his 18th league goal of the season.
The Nigeria international's second-minute effort was enough to take him two clear of Dundee's Murray and Celtic’s Daizen Maeda, both of whom ended the campaign on 16 goals.
Murray was unable to close the gap as Dundee defeated St. Johnstone 2-0 at McDiarmid Park on Sunday.
Dessers was in scintillating form during the season run-in, scoring in five consecutive matches.
This marks the third major Golden Boot of Dessers' career, having previously topped the scoring charts in the Eredivisie with Heracles Almelo in 2019–2020 and was the UEFA Conference League top scorer with ten goals in 2021–2022.
He succeeds Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer and becomes the first Rangers player to win the award since Alfredo Morelos.
Dessers found the net against ten different Scottish Premiership clubs this season, including Motherwell, Ross County, Heart of Midlothian, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee FC, St. Mirren, Celtic and Hibernian.
