CWC: Maresca backs Chelsea's youngest Nigerian Premier League scorer to replace Sancho
Published: June 16, 2025
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has identified history-making forward Tyrique George as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho during the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) in the United States.
At 19 years and 75 days old, George became the youngest player of Nigerian descent to score for Chelsea in the Premier League, achieving the feat in an Easter Sunday clash against Fulham and breaking the previous record held by Carney Chukwuemeka.
Sancho, who spent last season on loan at Stamford Bridge, has returned to Manchester United after failing to secure a permanent deal with the London club.
His departure has left a notable gap in Chelsea’s wing options, prompting Maresca to explore alternatives ahead of their CWC opener against Los Angeles FC.
During his pre-match press conference, Maresca acknowledged the need for reinforcements on the flanks and named Tyrique George among the players being considered to step up, alongside Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto.
"Jadon is not with us, so for sure that is a position we need to do something,” Maresca said.
"In this moment we have Noni, Pedro, and Tyrique as a proper winger. So for sure something have to happen.”
Tyrique George enjoyed an impressive season across both Chelsea’s senior and youth teams.
The 19-year-old registered two goals and three assists in 20 appearances spanning the Premier League and UEFA Conference League.
In Premier League 2 action, George further showcased his creativity, notching one goal and five assists in just eight appearances.
His performances earned him the Chelsea Academy Young Player of the Year award at the club’s end-of-season ceremony.
As the Blues gear up for their first match in the United States, George will be eager to cement his place in the first team during the global tournament and beyond.
