Greek report reveals AEK Athens still keen on Rangers striker Dessers but not at any cost
Published: June 17, 2025
AEK Athens remain interested in signing Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers, but the Greek club will not stretch beyond its financial limits to secure the Nigerian striker, according to respected journalist Kostas Ketsetzoglou.
Speaking on bwinSPORT FM 94.6, as reported by Sportdog, Ketsetzoglou said negotiations are still ongoing but a final agreement has not yet been reached.
"We have entered the awkward phase where something is progressing day by day but we still don't have a definitive conclusion," he explained.
AEK’s pursuit of Dessers initially appeared unlikely, but the deal has gained momentum in recent days.
"There has been a lot of pressure on Dessers to get to this point in this particular case, which we didn't believe when it was first released," Ketsetzoglou added.
While reports in Scotland suggested Rangers could lower their asking price to €4.7 million, Ketsetzoglou disputed that figure.
"The amount hasn't dropped as much as they say in Scotland, to 4.7 million euros, but I estimate that if Rangers get close to that, the golden mean will be found.
"AEK wants Dessers, but it has also set some limits for itself.”
Dessers, 30, has been Rangers’ most prolific striker over the last two seasons, scoring 51 goals since arriving at Ibrox.
Averaging approximately 25 goals per season, the Super Eagles forward has proven his worth as a reliable goal scorer.
AEK, who are looking to bolster their attack ahead of the new Super League and European campaign, see Dessers as a key target.
However, unless Rangers lower their demands, the Greek club may be forced to look elsewhere. Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days.
