Atletico Madrid remain keen on signing Super Eagles star Lookman, awaiting squad exits
Published: July 16, 2025
Atlético Madrid are actively pursuing Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, with recent developments indicating ongoing negotiations despite the club's recent acquisition of Thiago Almada.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atlético have maintained contact with Atalanta in recent days, signaling their strong interest in the 27-year-old, who is seen as a potential replacement for departing forward Ángel Correa.
However, the deal hinges on further exits from the squad and clarity on the final transfer fee.
Lookman, the reigning CAF Player of the Year, has been a standout performer for Atalanta, contributing 52 goals and 25 assists in 118 appearances, including a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final last summer.
His versatility, goal-scoring prowess, and ability to unbalance defenses have seen him linked with top European clubs, including Barcelona, Napoli, and Arsenal.
Atalanta have reportedly set an asking price of approximately €50-60 million, a figure that reflects Lookman’s market value and his contract, which runs until 2027.
The Spanish giants, under Diego Simeone, view Lookman as an ideal fit for their attacking setup, particularly following their recent signings of Alex Baena and Matteo Ruggeri.
The established relationship between Atlético and Atalanta, bolstered by prior transfers like Ruggeri and Juan Musso, could facilitate negotiations.
Atlético’s pursuit depends on financial maneuvering, potentially requiring sales of players like Samu Lino or Rodrigo De Paul to fund the transfer.
As the summer window progresses, Lookman’s future remains a focal point, with Atlético poised to act decisively if conditions align.
