'A great player' – Super Falcons coach Madugu hails Okoronkwo, avoids Banda comparison

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has refused to be drawn into comparisons between in-form striker Esther Okoronkwo and Zambia’s star forward Barbra Banda following Nigeria’s emphatic 5-0 victory over the Copper Queens at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday.

Okoronkwo delivered a standout performance in the quarterfinal clash, scoring once and providing an assist in the first half to help Nigeria book a spot in the semifinals in commanding fashion.

Her display has sparked debates among fans and pundits alike, with comparisons being made between her and Banda, who has also been one of the top performers in the tournament.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Coach Madugu praised Okoronkwo’s contributions but avoided direct comparisons.

"I wouldn't want to be drawn into the comparison between Banda and Esther, the technical committee will do that," he said.

"But as far as we're concerned, Esther is a key player in the team. If you look at the qualities she has, you will know she does a lot and works for the team.”

Madugu further highlighted Okoronkwo’s versatility and work ethic.

"She can play upfront alone and hold the ball and allow others to give her support. She has done well for the Super Falcons.

"Even in previous games that we have played, she has been consistent in goal scoring, irrespective of the time she plays, she either creates or scores.

"She is still developing and she has not gotten to where we know she can get to. She has a lot of potential and she is a great player.”

Despite the dominant win, the Falcons coach cautioned against overconfidence as the team prepares for their semifinal fixture, aiming for a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.

"We are very happy and excited but we are not getting carried away by this.

"We didn't look at it from that perspective, a revenge mission, but rather it was a game we needed to win to advance to the next stage of the competition."

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the semifinal round, with Madugu urging his players to maintain focus and continue their push for continental glory.
