Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig? Chelsea midfielder Chukwuemeka chooses preferred destination

German Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are both interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka this summer.

According to transfer market expect Fabrizio Romano, the England youth international of Nigerian descent is prioritizing a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.

Romano reported on Monday morning that negotiations are ongoing between Dortmund and Chelsea, with Chukwuemeka understood to be keen on making the move to Die Schwarzgelben.

With the player eager to join and Dortmund engaged in direct negotiations, attention now turns to whether a deal can be finalised between the two clubs in the coming days.

Chelsea are standing firm in their stance, insisting that any departure must be a permanent deal rather than a loan, which could complicate matters for Borussia Dortmund.

In search of first team opportunities, the young midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund, where he made 17 appearances in all competitions, including four in the Fifa Club World Cup.

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 but has struggled to nail down a consistent place in the starting XI, making just a handful of appearances due to stiff competition and injury setbacks.

Of his 32 appearances for Chelsea, Chukwuemeka was named in the starting XI on just five occasions — four times in the Premier League and once in the UEFA Conference League.

The 2022 European U19 Championship winner has three years left on his contract with Chelsea.
