Nottingham Forest striker shake-up: Awoniyi deemed surplus following Kalimuendo signing
Published: August 18, 2025
Nottingham Forest are reportedly willing to allow Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi to leave following the signing of French forward Arnaud Kalimuendo.
The 23-year-old striker joined Forest from Rennes after an impressive 2024/2025 season in which he scored 17goals and provided three assists in 33 league appearances.
The arrival of the French forward is expected to increase competition for Taiwo Awoniyi, who is now likely to fall to fourth in the pecking order behind Chris Wood, Igor Jesus, and Kalimuendo.
According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are prepared to part ways with the Nigerian forward, who is deemed surplus to requirement at the club.
Awoniyi, who remained an unused substitute in Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 win over Brentford in their Premier League opener, is expected to see limited game time this season, despite the club competing on four fronts.
With about two weeks left until the end of the summer window, the Nigerian International will hope to sort his future to secure consistent playing time and earn an invitation to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
Nigeria will take on South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Rwanda’s Wasps in must-win fixtures to keep their qualification hopes alive for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, after a disappointing start to the campaign.
