Eric Chelle yet to open talks with Borussia Dortmund's new signing over Nigeria switch
Published: August 27, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has not initiated discussions with Carney Chukwuemeka regarding a potential switch of international allegiance to Nigeria.
The Borussia Dortmund new signing, born in Eisenstadt, is eligible to represent three nations at senior level — Nigeria, England and Austria.
His international future has been the subject of speculation, with both the Nigeria Football Federation and Chelle reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the interest, no approach has been made to the midfielder or his representatives to persuade him to commit to the Super Eagles.
Chukwuemeka is currently provisionally cap-tied to England, having played a key role in their triumph at the 2022 European U19 Championship.
A switch to Nigeria would require Fifa's approval for a one-time change of association.
The Aston Villa academy product has represented England at U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels, making his competitive debut for the Young Lions in a European qualifier against Andorra U19s in November 2021.
Chukwuemeka recently completed a permanent transfer from Chelsea to Borussia Dortmund, where he will be hoping to relaunch his club career.
For now, he is understood to be leaning towards continuing with England, though his long-term decision remains open.
