Argentine-born 2025 Flying Eagles invitee signs new River Plate deal after first team debut

With a statement on their official website, AFA Liga Profesional de Fútbol club River Plate have announced that dual-national centre-forward Jonathan Spiff has signed a new contract.

Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires, to Nigerian father Godwin Asuzu and Argentine mother Maria, Spiff received a call-up to train with the Flying Eagles ahead of the 2025 Fifa U20 World Cup.

Less than five months after making his first team debut, River Plate have handed Spiff his first professional contract.

After starring for River Plate's youth teams, the 19-year-old made his senior debut for the club in a Copa Sudamericana group-stage clash against RB Bragantino on May 21, 2026.

A week later, he made another substitute appearance against Club Blooming in the competition.

Although River Plate have not disclosed the length or financial details of Spiff's new deal, reports in Argentina claim that he is now contracted to the 38-time Primera División champions until December 2028.

The deal reportedly includes a €100 million release clause, the standard amount for players developed in the club's youth academy.

Comfortable with both feet, Spiff describes himself as a player with great speed and intelligence, with an ability to read the game, a knack for scoring goals, and an intuitive understanding of how to create space and contribute to team play.
