Basel reveal real reason Otele is missing from squad to face FCZ amid transfer speculation

Super Eagles forward Philip Otele will miss FC Basel’s clash with FC Zürich on Saturday after the Swiss club confirmed that the winger is suffering from a back problem.

Basel confirmed on their official website that Otele is unavailable for the trip to FC Zürich, clarifying the reason for his absence amid continued speculation over his future.

The 27-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs during the current transfer window, with Serie A side Lecce among those linked with a move for the Nigerian.

Lecce emerged as one of the strongest contenders for Otele’s signature, but the proposed transfer stalled after a disagreement over the structure of the deal.

While the Italian club favoured a loan arrangement, Basel were understood to prefer a permanent transfer.

Otele has also been linked with Championship clubs Birmingham City and Derby County, with Derby having held discussions over a potential move for the winger.

Interest has also come from elsewhere in Europe, with Frosinone, Marseille and Union Berlin among the clubs mentioned in connection with Otele.

Saudi Pro League clubs, including Al-Fateh, have also been linked with the Nigerian.

However, his absence from Basel’s squad for Saturday’s meeting with Zürich is not understood to be a transfer-related decision.

Instead, the club has confirmed that Otele is unavailable because of a back problem, leaving him to watch the fixture from the sidelines while uncertainty continues over his next move.
