Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Tolu Arokodare helped Ajax Amsterdam secure their place in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League after scoring twice in a thrilling 5-3 victory over Sion on Thursday evening.
The Nigeria international was handed a starting berth ahead of Marcos Leonardo and repaid manager Míchel Sánchez's faith by finding the net in each half.
Youri Baas, Davy Klaassen and Oliver Edvardsen were also on target for Ajax, while Sion's Winsley Boteli produced an impressive individual display, scoring a hat-trick.
Before his standout performance, Arokodare revealed that Sánchez had informed him he would start against the Swiss side, although the striker admitted he was unsure why the manager had chosen him.
In quotes relayed by Ajax Showtime, the Super Eagles striker stated: " "The coach told me I would start, but I don't know why he chose that. He decides the lineup. I think it was my turn.
"You've seen that there has been rotation between Kasper, Leonardo, and me lately. So I think it was my turn. Maybe it will be Kasper or Leonardo again this weekend or next. The coach decides that."
Arokodare had made four previous appearances for the Amsterdam club, all coming off the bench, before making his full debut against the Swiss side following his loan move from Wolves.
The 25-year-old has made it clear that he is ready to contribute to Ajax in any capacity, whether he is named in the starting XI or called upon as a substitute.
"I always try to help the team in any way possible and make an impact, whether I play or not, and whether I am in the starting lineup or not.
"Whether it is with my words, my actions, or my presence: I try to help the team. That can be by scoring, providing assists, or defending.
"In whatever way, I try to help the team. Ultimately, the rule is: if the team wins, we all win. That is what counts."
Arokodare has now registered five goal involvements (3 goals, 2 assists) in five outings across all competitions for the Dutch giants.
