Chibuzor Okonkwo Takes Libyan Football By Storm
Published: September 10, 2013
Another chapter in the interesting story of Super Eagles utility player Chibuzor Okonkwo's football career began recently when he took his sublime skills to the North African country of Libya where he teamed up with Alswehly FC on loan from Oak Zeel FC of Nigeria.
The Beijing 2008 Olympic Silver medallist arrived Libya with a lot of pomp and pageantry as the club where delighted to capture a big star like him.
No sooner had he joined the team than he was thrown into the fray, as the club fielded him in their pre-season games in the Misurata 1st International Tournament Libya 2013.
He did not disappoint his new employers and their fans as he lived up to expectations and was clearly the best player on the pitch in both games against Mosta FC of Malta and USM of Tunis, going on to cap his performances with two Man-of-the-Match awards in what were his first two games for the club to drive his club's fans into a frenzy.
He helped his team win the tournament with a 1-0 victory against USM Tunis, and also picked the tournaments MVP award despite the presence of many other top internationals in the tournament.
Speaking exclusively to allnigeriasoccer.com, Chibuzor explained the rationale behind his decision to accept the offer of the Libyan club, and his ambitions.
"When I got the offer I was at first skeptical of playing in Libya but the club treated me like they needed me and took very good care of me and also told me their plans which I really liked because they portrayed themselves as an ambitious club and I am an ambitious player.
''Also, I see Libya as a stepping stone to greater heights and my performances here have been amply proof that I made the right choice.
''My immediate aim is to win the Libyan championship with my club, but my primary aim is to force myself back into the Super Eagles. I am glad coach Stephen Keshi and Nigerian fans know what I can do.
''I can play right back and left back and evene midfield, so when I am in the team their is adequate cover for many positions.
''I am sure I will get my opportunity again with the Super Eagles and when I do, I will grab it with both hands.
''I am only here in Libya for a short period on loan. After that I will move on with my career.
''But till then, I am focused on lifting my club to greater heights.''
