Published: October 16, 2013
Former Nigeria gaffer Lars Lagerback has performed a football miracle, leading Iceland, a country with a population of less than 350,000 people, to qualify for the play - off round of the Europe World Cup qualifiers.
On Tuesday, Lars Lagerback’s charges played a 1 - 1 draw with Norway and the tiny country could be featuring in their first ever World Cup if they scale the last hurdle.
The experienced manager, who has guided Sweden and Nigeria in the past, was delighted after securing a play - off place.
Speaking to the official website of UEFA, the 65 - year - old said : “Of course I could not see this coming when I began training the team but we talked to the players in January when we started this journey.
“We had a realistic chance to make the top two and you never know in football, but this has gone better and better.”
Adding to his previous statement, Lars Lagerback said :
“If we get to the World Cup final my contract is extended for half a year.
“It is better if we win the play-offs, then I will be in the job for another six months.”
Iceland will battle one of Croatia, Sweden, Portugal or Greece for a ticket to the 2014 World Cup.
The two legged play - off matches take place on November 15 and 19.
