Nigeria Wins Fifa Under 17 World Cup
Published: November 08, 2013
The Golden Eaglets maintained their undefeated streak when it mattered most, defeating Mexico 3 - 0 at the Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Friday evening to lift the Fifa Under 17 World Cup a record fourth time.
The Young Tricolor enjoyed possession at the early stages of the game while the Nigerians relied on their speed and counterattacks.
And in one of their trademark bursts from defense to attack, Nigeria took the lead in the 9th minute. Musa Yahaya’s shot was deflected into goal by right back Erick Aguirre.
Mexico searched for an equalizer and could have drawn level in the 30th minute if not for the brilliant Alampasu, who tipped
Rivas header over the bar for a corner.
Nigeria pressed further for a second goal and in one of the forays, the dangerous Musa Yahaya was unfortunate to hit the post.
Until the Scottish referee blew the whistle for the end of the first half, the Golden Eaglets kept bombarding the Mexicans.
They scored a second goal 10 minutes into the second half. Skipper Musa Muhammed’s shot was deflected by goalkeeper Gudino and Iheanacho tapped in the rebound for his sixth goal of the tournament.
Musa Mohammed struck in the 81st minute to seal a 3 - 0 win for Nigeria.
Kelechi Iheanacho was awarded the Golden Ball, as the best player of the tournament , and the Silver Boot for finishing the tourney as the second highest goal scorer with 6 goals.
Alampasu won the Golden Glove for being the most outstanding goalkeeper while captain Muhammed scooped the Fair Play award.
