Published: January 04, 2014
Club Brugge beat off competition form bitter rivals Anderlecht to land the signature of retired Super Eagle Daniel Amokachi in 1990, former Nigeria manager Clemens Westerhof has revealed in an interview with respected Nigerian journalist Kayode Tijani.
The Bull, as he was fondly called during his playing days, was part of Nigeria’s squad to the 1990 African Cup of Nations staged in Algiers and was considered one of the hottest prospects in Nigerian football, aged only 18.
“He phoned me in the middle of the night, precisely three am, I said what’s the problem, he said Club Brugge want Daniel Amokachi.
“I said hey this is three o clock in the middle of the night, the boys sleeping, he said wake him up.
“I have the papers, I have everything, he must sign otherwise Anderlecht, they come tomorrow and they must sign him.
“I told him I will do it okay, I called Daniel. I read everything and I said Daniel sign, he signed,”Westerhof told sportskt.com.
Daniel Amokachi justified his wonder-kid tag at Club Brugge, netting an impressive 35 goals in 81 official matches in his four - year stint in Belgium.
He put himself in the shop window at the 1994 Fifa World Cup and this earned him a big money move to Everton, England immediately after the tournament.
