Exclusive : Aliyu Abubakar To Test With Swedish Club; Bayer Leverkusen Also Interested In Starlet
Published: January 26, 2014
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that three Nigeria youth teamers - Aliyu Abubakar, Idowu Akinjide and Umar Ahmed - departed the shores of the country on Sunday morning for trials in Sweden.
17 - year - old Aliyu Abubakar, who is a center back, suited up five times for the Golden Eaglets at the Under 17 World Cup.
The Mutunchi Academy ace had been rumored to be on his way to either Belgium or Spain after his exploits in the United Arab Emirates but none of his suitors backed up their interests with an official bid.
Hope is not lost if Abubakar does not bag a contract with the unnamed Swedish club when tests are concluded.
Indeed, the World Cup winner has been invited to train with Bayer Leverkusen this summer before he is offered a deal.
Aliyu Abubakar was accompanied to Scandinavia by two other trialists - Idowu Akinjide and Umar Ahmed.
Going by FIFA rules, players yet to attain the maturity age of 18 cannot be transferred internationally.
Therefore, if the Nigerians are successful at the end of the exercise, in all likelihood the Swedish clubs will offer them a preliminary contract which will be activated when they clock 18 years.
