Dream Team VI started their bid to qualify for the 11th All Africa Games scheduled to take place in Congo Brazzaville on a positive note.
On Saturday evening, the Samson Siasia led side defeated their Gabonese counterparts 4 - 1 in Libreville.
Ahead of the crucial tie, most of the pre - match talk centered around the eligibility of Arsenal Under 21 skipper Alex Iwobi for the contest.
Shooting Stars ace Junior Ajayi gave the visitors a perfect start, scoring in the first minute and with two minutes to the end of the first stanza, former Udinese trialist Etebor Oghenekaro calmly put away his spot kick.
In the second half, Ajayi scored again to give Nigeria a three - goal cushion and that killed the game as a contest.
Substitute Peter Onyekachi scored his second international goal in the colours of the Nigeria Under 23s after Meye Axel had netted a consolation goal for the Gabonese.
The return leg comes up in the next two weeks at National Stadium, Abuja.
