Jordon Ibe (Liverpool ) and Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur) made Gareth Southgate’s starting XI but there was no place in it for Wolves right - back Dominic Iorfa, who was not included in the 18 - man squad.

On the stroke of half time, Ward-Prowse netted the game - winner from the spot after Nathan Redmond was felled in the penatly area by Norway skipper Jonas Gronner.

On a personal level, Spurs midfielder Dele Alli was delighted with the win but admitted that he did not live up to expectations, and he had to be withdrawn immediately after the intermission.

“Not a good performance personally, but great resilience from the boys to get the first win of the qualifiers âš½ï¸ #England21s,” tweeted Dele Alli.

Alli has now made two appearances for England Under 21s after debuting for the side last week in the 1 - 0 win over the United States U23s.
