Fifa Give The Nod To NFF To Cap Alex Iwobi
Published: September 23, 2015
Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has invited Arsenal striker Alex Iwobi for the upcoming friendlies against Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon after Fifa clarified that he can wear Nigeria’s colours as he didn’t feature for the youth teams of England in official games.
The 19 - year - old has 11 caps for England’s youth teams but later pledged his international future to the country of his birth and trained with the Nigeria Under 23s in January in his bid to familiarize himself with the Nigeria setup.
However, the teenager couldn’t make his international debut against Gabon the following month as the NFF and the player were unsure if his caps for the Young Lions were earned in competitive matches.
Alex Iwobi told allnigeriasoccer.com back in February : “I am not 100 percent sure if the games I played for England were competitive matches.
“I don’t think I played in the Euro qualifiers. I have played in tournaments, I don’t know if they count.”
Alex Iwobi is yet to make his competitive debut for Arsenal but that could change soon, with manager Arsene Wenger hinting that he may be considered for Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
