All the goals were scored during an 17 - minute spell in the first half, with Argentinian midfielder Diego Valeri netting the quickest goal in the history of the MLS Cup in the 27th second.
Rodney Wallace doubled the lead in the 7th minute but Kei Ansu Kamara pulled a goal back ten minutes later when he shot through Powell’s legs on the goal line.
On 70 minutes, Fanendo Adi would have tallied his 19th goal of the season, only for his header to hit the right post.
Portland Timbers had 8 shots on goal, with their Nigerian striker accounting for 3 while 2 of his efforts missed target.
