Chelsea Midfielder Mikel Disappointed With Loss To Sunderland
Published: May 09, 2016
Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel has rued Chelsea’s 3-2 loss to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday, with the dethroned champions leading 2-1 going into the interval.
Fabio Borini restored parity in the 67th minute before Jermain Defoe netted the match winner three minutes later to give the Black Cats hope in their fight for survival.
“We started the game well and for the first 30 to 35 minutes we had control and we were playing well,” said Mikel to chelseafc.com.
“We were creating chances, moving the ball quickly and players wanted to get involved.
“In the second half we came out and we wanted to carry on where left off but we didn’t kill the game when we had the chances to do it.”
Assuming Liverpool win the Europa League, it is confirmed that Chelsea have lost the chance to qualify for the competition next season, with 11 points separating them from West Ham United who are seventh on the table.
Mikel has started 18 times in the topflight this season and has been cautioned six times.
