Nigeria U23s skipper John Obi Mikel has admitted that the African champions were second best against Germany on Wednesday in Sao Paulo.
With the Dream Team missing the services of two key players in the shape of Oghenekaro Etebo and Azubuike Okechukwu, they struggled against the Germans, first conceding early in the first half, before Nils Petersen grabbed a second with one minute remaining.
“I wanted to win the gold medal , but the fact that we did not play well today . The Germans played well, ” the Chelsea midfielder said at the press conference on Wednesday.
“We are professionals , we can now claim third place and this is what we get . We want to give a medal to Nigeria. ”
Mikel has started every single game contested by the Dream Team in Brazil, and went the distance against the Germans.
