Sunderland Nigerian Wonderkids Maja, Asoro Destroy Southampton
Published: December 10, 2016
Nigerian wonderkids Joel Asoro and Josh Maja stole the show as Sunderland kept their title hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Southampton in Premier League 2 on Friday at Staplewood Training Ground.
After great build-up play, Sweden U21 international Asoro netted his second goal of the season in the 50th minute, and Maja added a second seven minutes later.
He bundled home a rebound after goalkeeper Harry Lewis had saved the initial effort from the Black Cats number seven.
With victory all but guaranteed, Asoro was replaced in the 72nd minute and Maja joined him on the bench with eight minutes remaining.
Southampton striker Olufela Olomola was on the pitch for the entirety of the game, teammate Jonathan Afolabi was a non-playing substitute.
