England Coach Shocked Spurs Midfielder Onomah Was Sent Off
Published: June 05, 2017
England U20s manager Paul Simpson has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah did not deserve to be sent off in his side's 1-0 victory over Mexico on Monday at the ongoing World Cup.
With the Young Lions leading 1-0 courtesy of Dominic Solanke's goal two minutes into the second half, they were reduced to ten men when referee Mohammed Hassan dished out a red card to Onomah for mistakenly making contact on the ankle of Juan Aguayo.
“It was an incredible decision to send Josh Onomah off. I have no idea what the referee saw,” Paul Simpson said.
“We now have a player suspended for a World Cup semi-final game for a decision that is absolutely ridiculous.
“It was a really tough game against an excellent Mexico side and I’m absolutely delighted to get through. ”
Onomah, 20, has been one of England's standout players in South Korea, and has started four games in the competition.
