Cyprus Plan To Hand Call-Up To Manchester United Product Of Nigerian Descent Ajose
Published: June 27, 2017
The Cyprus Football Association are planning to cap-tie Manchester United graduate Nicky Ajose by handing him a competitive debut when their national team faces Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifier in August.
The Daily Mail has reported that manager Christiakis Christoforou has earmarked Ajose as someone to bolster his attacking options.
Born in Bury to a Nigerian father and British mom, Ajose qualifies to represent Cyprus through his maternal grandfather Demosthenes Michael.
The 25-year-old made his debut for England U16s against Scotland in December 2006 and earned four caps in total for the squad before making his only appearance for the U17s against Turkey on August 31, 2007.
Ajose was called up by the Nigerian Federation to represent the Flying Eagles at the 2009 African Youth Championship but couldn't honour the invitation because the competition was outside Fifa's window for international matches.
The Charlton Athletic frontman is on the radar of Cypriot sides AEK Larnaca and Apoel Nicosia in the summer transfer market.
