Liverpool Lose To Atletico Madrid : New Paul Pogba, Solanke Feature, Firmino Spot On Twice
Published: August 02, 2017
Liverpool lost for the first time in pre-season after they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Spanish club Atletico Madrid in one of the most prestigious pre-season tournaments in the world, Audi Cup, at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
Members of the victorious 2017 England U20 World Cup squad of Nigerian descent Dominic Solanke and Ovie Ejaria (new Paul Pogba) tasted action for the Reds, with the Golden Ball winner starting and the midfielder coming off the bench on 64 minutes.
Diego Simeone's side took the lead in the 33rd minute through Keidi Bare, who blasted home a rebound after goalkeeper Daniel Ward punched away Angel Correa's effort.
Atletico Madrid's defense was had to crack for Liverpool and they could not get on level terms before the end of the first half.
On 83 minutes, Roberto Firmino restored parity when he converted a spot-kick after Origi was fouled in the box.
Penalties had to decide the winner of the Audi Cup, and while Firmino, Origi, Kent and Grujić were successful, Henderson missed.
