Brian Idowu Targets Echiejile's LB Spot, Says Shehu Is Main Player On The Right
Published: November 18, 2017
Brian Idowu is targeting Elderson Echiejile's left back spot in the Super Eagles after admitting that Cypriot-based defender Abdullahi Shehu has made the right back shirt his own.
The Amkar Perm defender made the headlines after netting on his debut for the Super Eagles in their 4-2 thrashing of South American powerhouse Argentina on Tuesday, eight minutes after coming off the bench.
Idowu is primarily a right back but can play multiple positions including left back, central defense, left midfield, left wing-back, right midfield and right wing-back.
When asked by the official website of Amkar Perm the position it's more realistic to gain a foothold in the national team, Idowu answered : ''Probably on the left. Because on the right there plays Abdullahi Shehu - he is the main player, played the entire qualifying round.
''To the left, of course, there are also good players, but I was played on this position, because it was on it they wanted to see.''
He added : ''Nigeria played for the first time in a formation with three central defenders, and for me this arrangement for Amkar is familiar. In the club, I know that I can safely join the attack, because I'm always confident in the cover.
''And there the guys were harder, especially in the first half. In the second half, when I came on, we were losing 2-1, and it was necessary to score.
''In addition, there were free zones, so a linear player made sense to connect. And in one of the episodes the ball came to me well''.
The 25-year-old was born in St. Petersburg to a Nigerian father and his mother is half-Russian, half-Nigerian.
