Nigerian Trio Missing As Chelsea Set Up Meeting With Real Madrid In UYL Quarters
Published: February 22, 2018
Two-time champions Chelsea have set up a meeting with Real Madrid in the quarterfinal of the UEFA Youth League after thrashing Feyenoord U19 5-2 at the Electrical Services Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Blues manager Joe Edwards omitted England youth internationals of Nigerian parentage Tariq Uwakwe and Faustino Anjorin from his 18-man squad, while Ola Aina's sibling Jordan was not in contention as he has yet to make his competitive debut for the U19s.
Ethan Ampadu and Daishawn Redan's goals put Chelsea in the ascendancy after ten minutes before Bouchataoui struck in the 15th minute to reduce the deficit, but an own goal from Reith restored the home team's two-goal cushion in the 27th minute.
An own goal from Geertruida and St Clair's effort made it 5-1 Chelsea before Lewis closed the scoring on 81 minutes.
Uwakwe has appeared in three matches for Chelsea in the UEFA Youth League this season while Anjorin made his debut against Atlético Madrid in December, his only appearance to date.
Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke are the top scoring players of Nigerian descent in the history of the UEFA Youth League with 12 goals each.
Super Eagles left-back Ola Aina has played the most games for an English club, 20 in total for Chelsea.
