Eagles Stars Etebo & Ezekiel Unable To Save Las Palmas From Relegation
Published: April 22, 2018
Oghenekaro Etebo, Imoh Ezekiel and Emmanuel Emenike have failed to aid struggling struggling UD Las Palmas's bid for survival after their relegation was confirmed after a 4-0 defeat against Deportivo Alaves on Sunday evening.
A double from the opposition's Mohammed Munir as well as strikes from Alvaro Medran and Ruben Sobrino put Paco Jemez's side to the distasteful defeat at the Gran Canaria Stadium, in a game which Palmas who had their La Liga status under threat utterly failed to turn up.
The signings of the trio have yet to significantly improve the club fortunes since they joined in the winter window and their club would now face up to the adventures of second-tier football next season.
Las Palamas have under-performed throughout the season and have garnered just five wins in 33 games with 21 points to show for it while they have lost 23 which is the second-worst in the division.
Their doom which had long been looming was confirmed with their latest defeat as they can no longer leapfrog 17th-placed Levante who already have 34 points and thus are consigned to finish in the bottom three.
Ezekiel and Etebo were named in the starting XI which fell to the crushing defeat on Sunday while Emenike who is yet to kick a ball for the club since joining was left out.
Both of Malaga Nigerian duo, Success Isaac and Brown Ideye had earlier failed to propel the club to safety and now the trio have been confirmed to have failed to orchestrate the La Liga escape test.
This is the first time UD Las Palmas would be dropping down to the Spanish Segunda Liga from the topflight since the 2014-2015 campaign when they gained promotion.
