Iwobi Gets Good Ratings Despite Arsenal's Loss To Manchester United
Published: April 29, 2018
Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi was rated highly by English sports media outlets in Arsenal's 1-2 away loss to rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford Sunday evening in what was manager Arsene Wenger's last game at the home of the Red Devils.
Iwobi played all 90 minutes in the game and was excellent as he was deployed in the number 10 role usually played by Mesut Ozil who was rested ahead of Thursday's Europa League commitment against Atletico Madrid.
Iwobi, according to Football.London, improved his performance when compared with his last showing against West Ham United.
The London based website wrote:
"Much improved showing on the one he produced against West Ham last time out. Played in a more central role and impressed with some neat touches and direct running." 7
A dedicated Arsenal FC blog, Arsenalstation.com in its rating said the following of Iwobi's performance:
"Not a bad performance in a more central role. Showed some good touches in the first half but final pass was still lacking." They scored the Nigerian 6.5/10.
Pain In The Arsenal declared where they would rather see Iwobi turn out for the Gunners:
"I much prefer him in a central, slightly deeper role like here. ''
"He certainly tired alongside Maitland-Niles in the second half, allowing United to grow stronger and stronger in the latter stages, but his work on the ball in the first hour or so was exemplary.
"He maintained the second-highest pass accuracy of the team, with well over half going forwards, completed two of his three dribble attempts, and was never outright dispossessed." Iwobi was handed a 7 from a possible 10 by the rating.
Up next for Iwobi and his teammates is the second leg of the Europa League semifinals clash at the Wanda Metropol itano Stadium against Diego Simeone's team.
The first leg ended in a 1-1 stalemate. The Europa League represents Arsenal's only chance of playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
