Kolpak Ruling : Why CD Leganés New Signing Omeruo Is Not Listed As A Foreign Player In La Liga
the signing of Super Eagles World Cup star Kenneth Omeruo on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Chelsea.

The Nigeria international will not take up a foreign quota spot on CD Leganés roster, or in other words, he won't be classed as a non-European Union player despite being in the possession of only a Nigerian passport.

In the Spanish La Liga, the rule states that each club can have up to three non-EU players but Nigerian players are excluded from the rule due to the Kolpak ruling in 2003.

Kolpak ruling is a European Court of Justice ruling handed down on 8 May 2003 in favour of Maroš Kolpak, a Slovak handball player and it declared that citizens of countries which have signed European Union Association Agreements have the same right to freedom of work and movement within the EU as EU citizens.

Kenneth Omeruo will be officially presented to the fans and media at ID Butarque next Friday.

The 24-year-old previously played on loan for ADO Den Haag, Middlesbrough, Kasimpasa and Alanyaspor.
