Nigeria 2 Netherlands 1: Club Brugge's Danjuma Makes Senior Debut For 1988 European Champions
Published: October 14, 2018
Nigerian-born midfielder Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld is now cap-tied to the Netherlands after making his competitive debut for the 1988 European champions in their 3-0 rout of Germany in a UEFA Nations League match on Saturday evening.
Shortly after the Super Eagles 4-0 thrashing of Libya, fans turned their attention to a game taking place at Johan Cruijff Arena (Amsterdam), as they wanted to know if Danjuma will get some minutes against the Germans.
And for 67 minutes it didn't happen but he entered the game as replacement for Steven Bergwijn a minute later and as a result he can no longer play for Nigeria in the future.
The Club Brugge star played with the number 22 with his Nigerian name 'Danjuma' written on the back of the jersey.
Born in Lagos to a Dutch father and Nigerian mother, Danjuma earned six caps for Netherlands U21 team, scoring 2 goals, before his senior debut on Saturday.
While the Nigerian Federation missed out on his services, they beat their Dutch counterparts to Haarlem-born defenders Troost-Ekong and Tyronne Ebuehi.
Ekong represented Netherlands at U19 and U20 level and the KNVB was on Ebuehi's case before he made his competitive debut against Iceland in June 2018.
