'Good To Score & Get An Assist' - 'New Mikel' Reacts After Best Performance Of The Season For Chelsea
Published: November 30, 2018
England youth international of Nigerian descent Tariq Uwakwe has spoken of his happiness after helping two-time champions Chelsea advance to the next round of the UEFA Youth League following their 6-0 rout of Elfsborg at Cobham on Wednesday.
Injuries have slowed the progress the versatile midfielder made in the last few seasons but he returned to play a key role against the Swedish opponents and was arguable one of the best players on the pitch.
The official website of UEFA credited Uwakwe with a goal and two assists in the comprehensive win against Elfsborg.
''It’s been hard, picking up a few niggles here and there, and missing a few games,'' Uwakwe told Chelsea's official website.
''It was good to be back, to get 90 minutes, score a goal and get an assist. I think I gave a good performance and it was nice to just be back playing again.''
The 19-year-old added : ''Joe said to go out and play with personality and do everything you can to stay in the team for the next game.
''It was a really good game and the boys turned up. It was a bit tough because when you’re 3-0 up from the first leg it can be difficult to stay motivated to keep playing and keep scoring goals.
''However, the boys did well to keep going and 6-0 in the end was a good result''.
Uwakwe has been on the books of Chelsea for ten years and has a contract with the Stamford Bridge outfit until June 30, 2019.
