Ndidi Shines, Iheanacho Subbed Off As Leicester Bow To Man City In EFL Cup After Penalty Shootout
Published: December 19, 2018
Super Eagles duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were both in action Tuesday night as Leicester City lost 3-1 on penalty shootout to Manchester City in their quarterfinals clash in the EFL (Carabao) Cup after a 1-1 draw on regulation time.
Ndidi provided the assist for Leicester's goal after City went aheadĀ at theĀ King Power Stadium with Marc Albrighton restoring parity for the Foxes after Kevin De Bruyne grabbed the opener.
Iheanacho made known his intention to produce the goods against his former club early in the game as he attempted to fire a shot past goalkeeper Arijanet Muric in the third minute from a Demarai Gray's cross butCity defender Eric Garcia cleared the ball before the Nigerian could pounce.
De Bruyne was afforded too much space to fire a low shot past Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward for City's goal in the 14th minute.
Iheanacho's chance to level score for the home side came 13 minutes before the half time break. The Nigerian bore down at goal. His shot at the edge of the box however went off target.
Two minutes after Iheanacho's effort, Wilfred Ndidi was badly tackled by former teammate Riyad Mahrez but the Algerian was not punished by the referee who bizarrely blew 'play on' and no card issued.
Just like Iheanacho, Ndidi also went close to scoring but his 42nd minute shot was only deflected for corner kick.
Ndidi's impressive play on the night culminated in a great assist for Marc Albrighton's goal in the 73rd minute as he found the winger with a wonderful lofted pass. The latter's half volley was too much for Muric to save.
Iheanacho was replaced by Ricardo Pereira with nine minutes left in the game.
It ended 1-1 at 90 minutes and in the ensuing penalty shootouts, Leicester converted just once but City scored thrice to gain victory over the hosts.
