The agreement between both clubs will see the central defender remain on loan at The Reds until the end of the 2018-2019 season.
Akpoguma has struggled for game time at Hoffenheim this term, playing eight games in the topflight and remains signed with his parent club until June 30, 2021.
Commenting on his transfer to Hannover 96, the 23-year-old stated : ''I'm really looking forward to the new challenge at 96, I want to get on the team quickly, get match practice and play my part in helping us reach our goal and make it into the league.
''It impressed me a lot I'll do my utmost to make it a loan that will benefit everyone.''
Born in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Akpoguma played for the youth teams of Rot-Weiß Speyer, Schwarz-Weiß Speyer, FC Bavaria Wörth and FC Neureut 08 before starting his senior career at Karlsruher SC.
