Southampton Striker Afolabi Nominated For Premier League 2 POTM Award
Published: March 01, 2019
Southampton striker Jonathan Afolabi has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award.
The 19-year-old was impressive for Southampton U23s in February, scoring in Premier League 2 Division 2 matches against Manchester United and Fulham to help the Saints record two wins on the bounce.
Afolabi has been shortlisted for the award alongside Jayden Mitchell-Lawson (Derby County), Bassala Sambou (Everton), Jeremie Frimpong (Manchester City), Morgan Rogers (West Brom) and Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka (Sunderland).
A week from today, the Nigeria-eligible youngster will discover if he won the award after the winner is chosen by the Premier League's Football Development Panel.
Leicester City striker Layton Ndukwu was the first player of Nigerian descent to be nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award this season but eventually lost out to Reading's Danny Loader, who won the August prize.
A Republic of Ireland U19 international, Afolabi played for Shamrock Rovers and St Joseph's Boys before he was snapped up by Southampton in the summer of 2016.
