Onuachu Enters African Football History Books : Fastest Intl Goal, 2nd Fastest On African Soil
Published: March 27, 2019
FC Midtjylland striker Paul Onuachu etched his name into the history books after scoring in the eighth second of Nigeria's 1-0 win against Egypt on Tuesday evening, which proved to be the game-winner, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The FC Ebedei product opened the scoring when he rifled home a
screamer from the edge of the box, off an assist from Hapoel Beer Sheva's John Ogu.
In doing so, Onuachu became the player to have scored the fastest goal in an international involving two African countries.
The goal is considered the second fastest goal scored on African soil, two seconds shy of the absolute record held by Club Africain's Ghazi Ayadi, who netted after six seconds in a 2-1 win vs CS Sfaxien at Stade Olympique de Radès on December 6, 2017.
Ex-Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski is credited with the fastest international goal in history, scored after six seconds in Germany's 4-2 win against Ecuador in May 2013.
Onuachu spent 87 minutes on the Stephen Keshi Stadium turf before he was replaced by 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers top scorer Odion Ighalo.
