Confirmed : Liverpool's Nigeria U23 Striker Joins Mainz, Subject To Medical
Published: August 06, 2019
Liverpool have confirmed via their official website that Nigeria U23 international Taiwo Awoniyi has joined FSV Mainz 05 on loan until the end of the 2019-2020 season, subject to a completed medical and international clearance.
Having failed to obtain a work permit to play in the Premier League, the former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles striker is embarking on his sixth loan spell after previously spending time at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron (twice) and KAA Gent.
Awoniyi made 38 competitive appearances for Belgian First Division A sides KAA Gent
and Royal Excelsior Mouscron last season, scoring 14 goals and adding three
assists.
The 21-year-old joined Liverpool in August 2015 after starring for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup and the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup.
In the new season, Awoniyi will compete with Austria international of Nigerian descent Karim Onisiwo for a starting shirt at Mainz.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp coached Mainz for seven years before he was appointed Borussia Dortmund manager in 2008.
