Nigerian Prodigy Scores First Competitive Goal For Manchester United Youth
Published: August 24, 2019
Manchester United returned to winning ways in the U18 Premier League by beating Blackburn Rovers 3-1 at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday, August 24, with three Nigeria-eligible youngsters in action for the Red Devils.
Manager Neil Ryan handed a start to his summer signing from Ajax Amsterdam, Dillon Hoogerwerf while Shola Shoretire and Ayodeji Sotona came off the bench in the 73rd and 76th minute respectively.
United practically killed off the game after nineteen minutes, scoring through Anthony Elanga (2) and Hoogerwerf.
Playing as a top striker with the number 9 on the back of his jersey, Hoogerwerf doubled his team's lead when he scored from six yards after brilliant work from Elanga in the 17th minute.
The 16-year-old had already scored for Manchester United's youth team before today's fixture but it was in a friendly against Aston Villa ten days ago.
Having made his competitive debut for the U18s off the bench against Sunderland before playing for 69 minutes vs Wolves, Hoogerwerf went the full ninety against Blackburn for the first time this season.
