Two Strikers Eligible For Nigeria Score As Manchester United Beat Wigan To Reach Last Four FAYC
Published: February 28, 2020
Two strikers of Nigerian descent were on target for Manchester United as they beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 to reach the semifinal of the prestigious FA Youth Cup on Friday night, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Manager Neil Ryan selected strikers Shola Shoretire and Ayodeji Sotona in his starting line-up for the game at Old Trafford while Netherlands U17 sensation with Nigerian blood in his veins, Dillon Hoogewerf was not available for selection due to injury.
Sotona came close to breaking the deadlock but his header from eight yards missed the target in the ninth minute and got another good chance midway through the first half but his effort was deflected behind.
The breakthrough finally came from Shoretire who fired home from the edge of the area to give United a 1-0 lead on 25 minutes but the visitors were level before the end of the half thanks to Sean McGurk's goal.
Five minutes into the second half, Sotona scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when he outpaced his marker and finished into the top corner.
Manchester United's reward for beating the Latics is a semifinal meeting against Chelsea .
