Botafogo Prefer Signing Mikel Over Toure As Former Barcelona Star Makes Fresh Contact
Published: April 06, 2020
Brazilian Serie A side Botafogo have decided to pursue the signing of John Obi Mikel rather than securing the services of former Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure, according to reports.
Toure's proposed move to Botafogo was thought to be dead in the water but there's a new development, with ESPN journalist Jorge Nicola revealing via his Youtube channel (as reported by Radio Botafogo) that Toure has been in contact with Botafogo officials in recent days over a deal.
Botafogo had negotiated with Toure before they turned their attention to Mikel after they failed to strike a deal with the four-time African Player of the Year.
It has been suggested that Botafogo prefer to sign the ex-Nigeria skipper because he is younger while the 36-year-old Toure is nearing the end of his career.
Mikel can join another club at zero cost after terminating his contract with Trabzonspor last month for reasons everyone is aware of.
The Chelsea icon is well known to Brazilian fans as he was part of the Nigeria squads to the 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games held in Brazil.
