Watford Reminisce Of Ighalo's Double Brace Enroute To Premier League Promotion
Published: April 21, 2020
Three years after his departure, Watford still retain fond memories of Odion Ighalo's five-star performance versus Blackpool in a Championship game, coinciding with their run to Premier League promotion during the 2014/2015 football campaign.
On 24th January 2015, the now-Manchester United striker lit up Vicarage Road in front of 17, 015 spectators, scoring four times in the second half as the Hornets recorded an unbelievable 7-2 victory.
Watford were trailing the Seasiders 2-0 at halftime courtesy of goals from Andrea Orlandi and Steve Davies but the hosts mounted a comeback after the break, with Ighalo kick-starting the rout just two minutes after the restart.
The 2019 AFCON Golden Boot winner added further three goals in the 54th, 73rd and the 81st minutes, to go with strikes from Troy Deeney, Matej Vydra and Gabrielle Anjella.
That season, Ighalo scored 20 league goals, seven less than top scorer Ipswich's Daryl Murphy as Watford narrowly missed out on the title but clinched automatic top flight qualification nonetheless.
