2013 U17 World Cup Winner Awoniyi Reacts After Second Goal In German Football
Published: May 17, 2020
In his seventh appearance for Mainz 05 since his loan move from Liverpool last summer, 2013 U17 World Cup-winning striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored his second goal in German football but his first in the Bundesliga as Mainz came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Cologne.
Awoniyi found playing opportunities hard to come by before the league was halted in March, failing to make Mainz's match day squad in nine consecutive matches.
Another loan move was on the cards in the January transfer window but Liverpool wanted to send him to a league he had not experienced before, so the transfer market shut and he remained a player of Mainz until the summer.
Awoniyi showed impressive composure to tuck home in the 61st minute, which inspired a second half comeback.
Speaking post match, the number 22 expressed his delight at scoring his first goal in Mainz colours.
"I'm really happy about scoring my first goal for Mainz! We came back very well as a team today and fought our way back into the match!" Awoniyi stated.
With eight rounds of fixtures remaining in the German top-flight, Mainz are 15th in the 18-team table with 27 points, four more than Fortuna Dusseldorf.
