Confirmed : West Ham U23 Captain Who Models His Game After Sergio Ramos Inks New Deal
Published: June 10, 2020
West Ham have informed via their official website that central defender of Nigerian descent, Tunji Akinola has inked a contract extension with the club.
Akinola and three other promising players namely Alfie Lewis, Emmanuel Longelo and Sean Adarkwa are now committed to the Hammers until June 30, 2021, having put pen to paper on one-year deals.
Aged 21, Akinola captained West Ham U23s in the second half of the 2019-2020 campaign after returning from a year-long injury lay-off.
Capable of playing as a left-back, he has cited Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos among the defenders he models his game on.
Before the academy season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic, he played five matches in total for the U23 side, including four Premier League 2 games and was on target in a 3-3 draw vs Reading in January.
Akinola joined West Ham at the age of eight, rising through the ranks before making his debut for the U18s against Everton on March 29, 2014 while still a schoolboy.
West Ham U23s were unbeaten in the Premier League 2 Division 2 in the 2019-2020 season.
