Chelsea Legend Obi Mikel Impresses On His League Debut For Stoke City
Published: September 12, 2020Chelsea icon John Obi Mikel has made his competitive debut for Championship club Stoke City, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The signing of the former Nigeria international in August created a real buzz among the Potters fans given the titles he won during a ten-and-a-half-year association with Chelsea.
Having impressed in three pre-season friendlies against Shrewsbury Town, Leeds United and Newcastle United, Stoke City boss Michael O'Neill wasted no time in naming Mikel in his starting lineup to face Millwall at the Den on Saturday afternoon.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner was partnered in central midfield by captain Sam Lucas and Nick Powell, and the number 13 gave a good account of himself, so much so that he was on the pitch for the entirety of the game despite not playing competitively since March 2020.
It was all square at the break with little between the two sides and the scoreline didn't change at the end of ninety minutes as Stoke City bagged a crucial point on the opening day of the Championship season.
Mikel has now made 392 appearances for his English clubs, with 372 coming in the colours of Chelsea
